How to write a great Airbnb listing headline

Woman writing an Airbnb listing

Airbnb hosting competition is steep out there, and your Airbnb listing is (pretty much) all you have to keep your calendar full. That’s why creating a killer headline for your listing is crucial to draw readers in and actually discover your property. So, in this article, we give you tips — and even formulas you can use — to make this happen.

Max out your title

Airbnb gives you 50 characters (including spaces) for your headline, so use them all. Pack this title with informative, descriptive words that help create an enticing picture in the reader’s mind. We’ll give you more info on helpful words to use further below.

Think of your target audience

What type of guests are you trying to attract? Are you attracting beach lovers to your beachside abode? Let them know you’re minutes or metres away. Are you superbly located near local tourist attractions? Why not tell them. Dog friendly? That’s handy for pet lovers; once again, let them know.

Save space with abbreviations

With only 50 precious characters to use, you’ll want to use them wisely. So, truncate or abbreviate things when you can. For example, use:

  • ‘&’ instead of ‘and’
  • ‘w/’ instead of ‘with’
  • ‘BA’ instead of ‘bathroom”
  • ‘BR’ instead of ‘bedroom’
  • ‘APT’ instead of ‘APT’
  • ‘AC’ instead of air-conditioning

Use emojis – sparingly

This tip comes with a caveat: only use emojis if you know your target audience — and know they are comfortable with the odd emoji. If you’re prospective guests are conservative or relatively senior, perhaps skip the idea. However, when used discerningly, the odd emoji can be fun. Just don’t overdo it.

Avoid cliches and generic words

Try to steer away from the obvious. Instead, use descriptive words to help the reader’s imagination along. Good words that help set the scene are everywhere, but to get you started, here are some examples: lush, luxury, breezy, newly renovated, glamorous, pristine, secluded or peaceful. Notice how they help the imagination along?

Avoid ALL CAPS

Using ALL CAPS on the Internet gives the impression you are shouting and tends to look like spam or low-quality content. So stay away from your Caps Lock button, where possible.

Highlight your best features

Think of what makes your property stand out and add it to your headline. For example, if you’re two minutes from the museum, you can add this quickly to the end of your headline. For example, “Cosy Inner-city APT – 2 Mins From the Museum”.

Similar examples include:

  • Pet-friendly
  • Fully air-conditioned
  • With swimming pool
  • Large balconies
  • Centrally-located
  • Off-street parking

Mention nearby tourist landmarks

Much like highlighting your best features, you can slip in details about famous landmarks at the end of your headline to add extra appeal to your property. For example:

  • 2 mins from the stadium
  • walk to the ferry
  • 1 minute from the station
  • walk to opera house

Copy these formulas

iGMS has gone further with its headline ideas, offering formulas to ensure you make your description sparkle. Try some of the following:

Title example 1: Rustic Private Cottage w/ King Bed + Oceanside View

Formula 2: [Adjective] [Property Type] Near [Landmark] – [Distance]
