Mandurah is one of Western Australia’s hidden gems known for its stunning waterways, beautiful beaches, and ever-growing community. It’s a fantastic destination for holidaymakers, be it families, couples or solo travellers — and the fact that it’s only 72 Km south of Perth and a quick 54-minute drive away only adds to its appeal.
There are plenty of things to do in Mandurah, but if you haven’t been before, we’ve compiled a list of just some of the activities you and your family can enjoy.
Mandurah dolphin cruise
Did you know that over 85 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins live in the Peel-Harvey Estuary? The abundance of local fish, calm (and warmer) waters and absence of predators make it an ideal environment for them to raise their calves. It’s such a great environment that these dolphins never leave — Mandurah is their home.
Several operators offer dolphin cruises that take you out into the pristine waters of the Mandurah Estuary. This gives you a unique chance to see dolphins in their natural habitat, and you’ll often see these dolphins swimming alongside the boat. Most cruise operators include commentary about the local marine life and environment, so it’s an educational and enjoyable experience for all.
Mandurah beaches
Mandurah boasts some of the best beaches in WA — with pristine white sand and crystal clear waters. If you’re looking for a popular spot, try Silver Sands Beach or Halls Head Beach — both are perfect for swimming, sunbathing and beach activities. Families can enjoy a picnic on the shore — but if you’re in the mood for more adventure, you can try your hand at paddle boarding or jet skiing.
Mandurah Estuary and Wetlands
A haven for wildlife, the Mandurah Estuary offers tourists numerous trails for walking and cycling. A 3.5 km eastern foreshore pathway provides stunning views of the water — and it’s perfect for a stroll or bike ride. If you’re into birdwatching, the nearby wetlands are ideal for spotting various bird species, including pelicans and swans.
Mandurah Ocean Marina
The Mandurah Ocean Marina is a popular spot, bustling with a hub of activities and lined with cafés, restaurants and local shops. You can enjoy lunch or dinner with a view of the marina or wander the various boutique shops. There are often events and markets, particularly on weekends, giving it a lively atmosphere. If you can, try to squeeze in a walk along the Marina in the early evening to enjoy the stunning sunset views.
Local Art and Culture
You may be surprised that Mandurah has a robust cultural scene, with several art galleries and installations to explore. The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre is also a popular destination, often featuring theatre performances, music and dance. The Mandurah Community Museum showcases the local history and heritage, making it an excellent place for those interested in learning more about the area.
Water Sports and Fishing
Mandurah is a great place to get physical, making it ideal for sporting types and adventure seekers. The flat, pristine waters are perfect for swimming, jet skiing and kayaking. At the same time, those keen on fishing will enjoy the estuary and surrounding waters, which are abundant with fish. And if you’re eager for even more fishing, various local fishing charters can take you to the best spots in the area.
Cafés and restaurants
Mandurah is packed with restaurants and cafés serving fresh seafood and local produce. Visiting Mandurah wouldn’t be complete without a serving of their famous fish and chips — and with the amount of excellent fish and chip shops available, you won’t be disappointed.
